Cultural Anthropology A Microcosm For The World We Live
Anthropology is a science that fascinates me, and is what inspired me to take the Introduction to Cultural Anthropology course at UMKC. It is one of the most expansive fields in terms of what it covers, and is constantly uncovering new information that is applicable to peoples globally. It does come with a very challenging task however, and that is possessing the power to change mindsets, beliefs, stereotypes, politics, economies and societal norms. Seth Holmes’s book is a microcosm for the world we live in. Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies exposes the crude reality of produce farm work in America and brings to light issues that can be expanded beyond the cases of these migrant workers, to migrant and foreign workers all over the world. This essay will relate Holmes’s novel with the course material I have reviewed over the semester. From a young age I could remember my grandmother scolding my mother for not teaching me to speak Spanish fluently. I always questioned the importance of being bilingual, like how would this every help me in a world where English is becoming the native tongue. Before I stumbled across the research done on bilingualism I had very little to none background knowledge on bilingualism. I thought the only outcome of being bilingual or multilingual is you get to socialize with other people from other backgrounds and maybe have more opportunities to a more variety of jobs. Both words have more than one function in English, but a common challenge for ESL learners is how to use many and much with countable and uncountable nouns. Countable nouns have singular and plural forms. Countable nouns are so called because they can be counted as individual items. Many, in the sense of â€Å"a large and indefinite number,†is used with countable nouns: many cats many apples many books many countries many people Uncountable nouns are construed as singular. They are not used with a number. Much, in the sense of â€Å"a great amount of,†is used to qualify uncountable nouns: much coffee much rice much disagreement much wrangling much love The word much can also function as an adverb and as a pronoun: adverb Thank you very much.
